Coconut trees can Save The World !!! Here's How

Coconut trees can Save The World

You might ask how can a tree-like coconut tree help in saving the world. Well, coconut is indeed is regarded life-saving tree as it could provide water to a stranded person on an Island or some food or oils from the fruit or also providing some shelter or crafts from its leaves. Well according to Indians the tree is also called Kalpavriksha, which means a wish-fulfilling tree. As all the parts of the tree could be used in some applications. But it would be difficult to digest for some but you will be surprised to find out that there are more applications of these coconut trees than you might have known, Which could help in saving the earth.

1. Saving lives & Reducing Green house Gases

In our world, the Leather fabric has been used from ancestor periods for creating clothing & accessories, but as the fabric is created from animal skin an animal is to be killed for removing the skin. Which is later processed & turned into leather. This horrifying process is also the main factor for industrial water pollution, which changes watercolor into the red due to acidic contents in it. But it is also responsible for the rise in Global greenhouse gases produced from the live stocks breeding for Leather.

But this can be reduced with the help of coconut. This is made possible by Zuzana co-founder of Malai Biomaterials in Kerala, India. Using coconut water as the raw material for the process, which is sourced from a coconut processing unit in South India. This coconut water then undergoes sterilization, after which bacterial culture is allowed to feed on natural energy-rich nutrients. Then, in the end, a sheet of cellulose jelly is produced. This jelly undergoes another refinement process. Enriching it with natural fibers, gums, and resin to create a more durable and flexible material that can be used as an alternate to Leather for crafting into accessories.

2. Reducing strain on Soil from degradation

Soil is a limited resource on earth. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it requires at least 100 years to form only an inch of topsoil. And around the world, one-third of soil is in poor condition. Due to which scientist predicts that within 60 years that our soils will degrade so much that it will not be able to support life. Which could lead to food shortage. But this could be avoided if we use of technology of hydroponics. Hydroponics is the technology that helps to grow plants without using soil. Here comes coconut, in the form of a soil-like substance called Cocopeat. Cocopeat is made from the outer husk of coconuts, which has high moisture capturing capacity which could help plants to survive more without or less water. It could also be mixed with some nutrients & compost providing effective growth for plants like in soil. What if we could grow plants using Cocopeat at home? Well, a retired IAS officer named Radhakrishna made it possible, who grows about 2 kgs of vegetables on his roofs every day at his home without using soil but using Cocopeat. But what if we could use this on a large scale, the results are unimaginable.

Or Follow the process if you want to DIY (Do it yourself) Cocopeat at home-

  1. Take coconut and remove its threaded skin.
  2. Now put it in the mixer and make a powder from it.
  3. Put that powder into the soil and your cocopeat is ready.

3. Reducing plastic waste

In the USA as per studies suggest the plastic straws used in a single day could encircle the earth 2.5 times. And these strays are either recycled or end up lying in oceans for thousands of years.

But this could be stopped by using straws made from the leaves of the coconut. And this is done with the help of women of a village by a startup named Sunbirds straws in Banglore, India. Providing employment & saving the earth from the pollution of plastic. For manufacturing a straw, the first dry up the leaves, then cover them with a chemical-free process with a hydrophobic material. This hydrophobic material covered helps straw not do to dissolve in water for about hours, which is pretty enough to have a drink. This idea was also awarded the best initiative with a social impact award in Netherland against 45 other amazing entries. This amazing idea also booked global orders of 6000 crores of straws to Sunbirds straws.
